Bar Pantiri became carpenter. Then suddendly some people realized that Bar means son. So he became son of a carpenter.

Among the Europeans living in the occupied Palestine of time when Jesus-stories took shape two groups were politically important. The ruling group Romans and the defeated group Greeks.

In the ears of these mixed milieu carpenter made sense because Carpenterius was a Roman legion responsible for fixing or making wheels, chariots and carriages of the Roman army.

That the person under consideration was supposed to be a carpenter in this sense and not in the sense of a maker of ordinary benches and tables possibly follows from the foul story that Pantiri was a Roman soldier.

We can also suspect that an association of Jesus-story with carpentry also entered the ears of the mixed milieu because the variants of some words related to Nasara (Nazarene) sounded like "najjar" meaning carpenter.

Carpenter did not become Bar Pantiri. Bar Pantiri is a taunt. We can think it and its variants Bar Pandera or son of Panthera to be a taunt on the phrase son of parthenos meaning son of a virgin.

Both scholars and laymen forget Mark 6:3 tells that Jesus was a carpenter and Mary's boy. In Mark's gospel Jesus was not a son of a capenter. Mark does not tell anything about the alleged father of Jesus. In Mark, Joseph is a "brother" of Jesus. However this name Joseph is usually hidden under Jose, Joset or Joses so that non-scholars and idiots cannot see.

This also supports our view that Bar Pantiri was changed to carpenter and then someone corrected it to the son of a carpenter because he noticed that Bar means son.
